Self-exclusion: how to take a long break from gambling
Self-exclusion is the strongest responsible gambling tool: a formal request to be blocked from gambling for a set period. This page explains how it works, using Portugal's central register as the example, and describes lighter tools — cooling-off periods and deposit limits — for when you need to slow down rather than stop.
Self-exclusion in Portugal: the SRIJ register
In Portugal, self-exclusion from online gambling is handled centrally by SRIJ, the regulator, rather than casino by casino. Since 8 April 2026 there has been a new self-exclusion form. The key rules:
- One request covers all licensed operators simultaneously.
- Minimum period of 3 months, or indefinite.
- Delayed revocation: if you change your mind, early revocation takes effect only one month after you notify it, and never before the 3-month legal minimum.
The delay is deliberate. The urge to return is usually strongest in the days after a request; a month's wait makes sure any return is a calm decision.
How to self-exclude, step by step
- Find the self-exclusion form on the SRIJ (Turismo de Portugal) website.
- Identify yourself with the same details used for casino verification — usually the Cartão de Cidadão.
- Choose the period: at least 3 months, or indefinite.
- Keep the confirmation.
- Remove gambling apps and unsubscribe from promotional e-mails.
Readers in other countries should look for their own regulator's scheme; many European regulators run a central register on similar lines, but periods and procedures differ.
What self-exclusion does not cover
Portugal's register applies to operators licensed by SRIJ. Sites without that licence are not connected to it — one more reason to play only with operators on the official list. If you find yourself looking for unlicensed alternatives during an exclusion, treat it as a clear signal to seek professional support, starting with your family doctor.
Lighter options: take a break
- Cooling-off period or timeout — a temporary lock of hours to weeks, depending on the operator.
- Set a deposit limit — licensed operators in Portugal must offer daily, weekly and monthly limits; a low limit is often enough.
- Loss limit and session limit, where offered.
- Practical distance — log out, delete the shortcut, leave the card somewhere else.

When the period ends
Review what has changed before playing again. If you return, set a deposit limit before the first deposit and keep sessions short. If the warning signs come back, exclusion can be renewed or made indefinite. There is no rule that says you must return at all.
