Cricket betting: a newcomer's guide to formats and markets

An over is six deliveries. One team bats and scores runs while the other bowls and fields, trying to dismiss batters; then they swap. The side with more runs wins, subject to special rules when weather shortens a game.
Main markets
- Match winner — in Tests, often with a draw option.
- Top batter / top bowler — many runners, typically wide margins.
- Total runs — over or under a line, for a team or a block of overs.
- Toss winner — essentially a coin flip with the bookmaker's cut added.
Working out the margin
In a T20 priced 1.75 and 2.10, the implied probabilities are 57.1% and 47.6%, adding to 104.7% — a margin of about 4.7%. On the toss priced 1.90 each way, the margin is about 5.3% on an event no analysis can predict. That is, in effect, a casino bet with a higher edge than single-zero roulette.
Rain and no-result rules
Weather plays a big part. Shortened matches use a formal method to reset the target, and abandoned games can end with no result. Each bookmaker sets out what happens to bets in those cases, and the rules differ between match-winner and player markets. Read them first.
Why to go slowly
Without knowledge of pitch conditions, team form and the format's rhythms, a cricket bet is closer to a guess than an informed view.
