Basketball betting: spreads, totals and a very fast clock
Basketball produces lots of scoring and relatively few shocks per possession, so bookmakers price it through lines: point spreads and totals set to the half point. NBA and EuroLeague read differently
NBA games last 48 minutes with a fast pace and high totals; EuroLeague follows FIBA's 40-minute format with fewer possessions and lower totals. A total of 158 might be ordinary in Europe and absurd in the NBA. NBA scheduling adds back-to-back games and rest decisions for star players, and news about who plays moves lines late. A spread in numbers
Say Team A is −5.5 at 1.91 and Team B is +5.5 at 1.91. A €10 bet on A returns €19.10 if A wins by six or more; a five-point win loses. The two prices imply 52.4% each, 104.7% together — a margin of about 4.7%. To profit long-term on spreads you need to be right more than 52.4% of the time at those prices, which is harder than it sounds.
In-play: casino pace
Leads change often and live prices update after almost every basket. That gives dozens of opportunities per hour — the same tempo as a live roulette table, but with a margin you cannot see directly. Decide on a maximum number of live bets per game and keep to it.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that overtime may count towards totals and spreads.
- Betting single quarters, where margins are usually higher.
- Stacking several spreads into one parlay and multiplying the margin.
Budget
