Reels, lines, ways and clusters

A payline slot pays only when matching symbols land on predefined lines, typically 10, 20 or 25 of them; your stake is split across the lines. A ways-to-win slot pays any run of matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, wherever they sit, and some change reel heights every spin so the number of ways varies. A cluster slot drops the reels idea altogether: a grid pays when enough identical symbols touch. The mechanic tells you how often small hits appear; it does not tell you whether the game is generous.

RTP: what the percentage promises

RTP is the share of all money staked that a game returns over its entire lifetime — millions of spins across all players. A 96% slot keeps, on average, 4 cents of every euro wagered. Over one evening of 300 spins, that average is buried under variance: you might end well up or well down. RTP is a comparison tool, not a forecast. Two practical points: studios often supply several RTP versions of one game and the casino chooses which to run, and the figure that applies to you is the one shown in the rules inside the game in your account.

Volatility and hit rate

Volatility describes how the return is distributed. Low-volatility slots pay small amounts often; high-volatility slots go quiet for long stretches and then pay in bursts. Hit rate — how often a spin returns anything at all — is related but different. A game can hit on one spin in three and still be high volatility, because most of those hits return less than the stake.
